Pruning
Proper pruning of your trees and shrubs is extremely important to the look and health of your property. At McKenzie Landscaping, LLC, all of our pruning projects are overseen by an ISA certified arborist. A proper pruning program will include:
Proper pruning and shaping of your ornamental plants. Some plants thrive and look their best if they are sheared frequently and will not grow to their full potential if they are not. Some plants should never be sheared or headed back because they will sucker vigorously or die back. When this happens, it may be impossible to bring the plant back to health. Plants of this nature can be pruned by hand to keep them from outgrowing their place. Plants that flower must be pruned at the proper time or the buds that produce the flowers will be cut off and the plant will not flower the whole season. Our technicians can create a schedule that would best fit the needs of each individual plant.
Training of young shade trees. This is critical to ensure that the tree will develop into a strong healthy tree for many years to come. The tree should be pruned for proper branch spacing and structure. Branches that are too close together should be removed to stop them from growing together and becoming weak and diseased. Limbs that are not growing at the proper angle should be removed so that they won’t become a hazard or crowd out other limbs in the future. By training trees when they are young, you will avoid the future costs of extensive pruning in a larger tree and avoid the hazard of having weak and diseased limbs breaking and damaging property.
Annual pruning of mature trees. Dead and diseased limbs should be removed along with low limbs and limbs that are touching the walls and roof of the building. Hazard limbs should be identified and the risk mitigated. Our certified arborist will help to develop a program to help keep your mature trees vigorous.
Deep Root Fertilization
Trees and shrubs that are planted in our urban setting have to deal with soil that is often very deficient in the nutrients they need to thrive. Trees that are planted in poor quality soils will struggle to establish, grow poorly, attract pests and insects, develop chlorosis and ultimately die prematurely.
A proper fertilizer program will give your plants what they need to overcome these deficiencies, young trees will establish quickly and grow properly, mature trees will continue to thrive and resist pest infestation, and trees and shrubs that flower will produce large colorful blooms. Our regular fertilizer program includes two deep root feedings that are designed to give your plants what they need when they need it. The 1st application will prepare your plants to get off to a great start in the spring and help them to thrive through the heat of the summer. Our 2nd application will replenish the nutrients that were depleted in the summer and help your plants to develop stronger more active root systems. Trees that are showing signs of severe nutrient deficiencies will be given injections directly into the cambium to help them recover and look better quickly.
Insect & Disease Control
McKenzie Landscaping, LLC prides itself on an extensive knowledge of the valley’s trees and shrubs. Not only are we able to properly identify each plant and species, but we are able to identify which insects and diseases affect these plants. We use this knowledge to customize a pest management program for your property that will keep your plants healthy and free from disease, protect beneficial insect populations, and minimize the overall amount of pesticide applied on your property. We utilize some or all of the following tools to accomplish this:
Dormant spraying. Spraying with horticultural oil is a tried and true way to control populations of aphids, mites, and scale. It is the safest and most environmentally friendly way to control pest insects.
Targeted pesticide applications. These are used when we identify pests feeding on specific plants. By treating only the plants that are hosting the insects, we are able to suppress pest populations, protect beneficial insect populations, and minimize the amount of pesticide used.
Systemic Injections. These are used to protect against reoccurring problems caused by aphids and borer insects. This is another way to target the pest and protect the beneficial insects. Only the insects that feed on the plants will be affected and no pesticide is applied outside the specific plant. Systemic injections can also be used to treat some fungal diseases.
